Rationale and Purpose of the Module:

This module is designed to further develop students understanding of the role of human resource development in organisations. Here the intention is to develop strategic awareness of the role of HRD to facilitate effective organisational functioning through developed capability. The area of strategic HRD is explored with a focus on the devolvement of HRD down through the organisation. There is a specific emphasis on the development of the HRD function and all that that entails û development of policies, budgets, resources, etc. The module also explores surrounding themes in HRD such as managing diversity, managing knowledge, professional standards and ethics, the role of networking and collaboration in HRD and 360 degree feedback.

Syllabus:

The syllabus covers core issues surrounding the organisation of Human Resource Development systems at work. The key areas focused on in this module include the integration of HRD within broad based business strategies and the nature of the relationship between HRD and core HR policy domains. Functional aspects associated with organising and managing HRD are reviewed: Establishing a HRD function, developing HRD strategies and policies, costing and budgeting HRD, in terms of physical resources, and specialist employee development staff, marketing the HRD function and the evaluation of the HRD function. Key issues surrounding emerging themes in HRD are engaged; Standards and ethics in HRD; managing diversity through HRD; managing knowledge in HRD; learning through inter-organisational networking; and finally, the role of 360 degree feedback in HRD.

How the Module will be Taught and what will be the Learning Experiences of the Students:

The module will be delivered predominantly through lectures. However, students will be required to participate throughout these facilitated sessions with a good deal of group work incorporated into the traditional lecture format. Students will be exposed to realistic situations via case studies and discussion groups and will be required to apply the theory in a practical way.
